The technocrat totalitarian system cannot beat us, as it relies on a grid that fails or can be defeated–power is off now in large parts of Spain, Portugal and France

A major power outage hit Spain on Monday, shutting down trains, airports and other critical infrastructure and causing chaos in cities across the country. Parts of Portugal and France were also affected by the blackout, which energy authorities said occurred following a disruption in the European grid.

“The interruption was due to a problem in the European electricity grid,” E-Redes, the national energy supplier of Portugal, said in a statement. In addition to Portugal, it said, “The blackout also affected regions of Spain and France, due to faults in very high voltage lines.”

António Leitão Amaro, the minister of state for the presidency in Portugal, said on national radio that there was no evidence of a cyberattack.

Renfe, the national rail company, wrote in a post on X that “at 12:30 p.m., the entire National Electricity Grid was cut off,” adding that trains had stopped operating at all stations.

Local trains are also affected. In southeastern Spain, Valencia’s local train service said in a post on X that traffic had been disrupted throughout its entire network: “The extent and duration of the outage are unknown.”

The blackout continues at 4 pm EDT

Every national grid in the world will need to spend heavily to upgrade distribution systems to connect scattered renewable generation and ensure it is balanced.

What is grid balancing?

The grid needs constant management to ensure it is not overloaded by too much generation, or left short by too little. Power stations will shut down automatically if the frequency breaks out of normal range. To restart they must then be reconnected to users.

Balancing has been important as long as there has been a grid, but there is more focus on the issue because of the rapid switch to renewables like solar and wind, which are intermittent…

The ministry of interior said the emergency status will be applied in the regions that request it, with Madrid, Andalusia and Extremadura asking the central government to take over public order and other functions.

More than 20 per cent of Spain’s power has been restored, according to Spanish grid operator Red Electrica, with Portuguese operator REN warning it could take up to a week to restore the power grid fully.

While Spain’s prime minister has said the cause of the blackout remains unknown, REN has said there was a “very large oscillation in the electrical voltages, first in the Spanish system, which then spread to the Portuguese system”.

It’s estimated that millions have been left without power and water in the midst of the blackout, and many travellers were affected by flights grounded to and from the popular holiday destinations.
