Chicago Tribune blogger Eric Zorn wondered what was up with a “shock radio” commercial for swine flu vaccine this month. So he investigated. Apparently the US Government is not sufficiently in debt: it made grants to all the states to educate us about swine flu. Is there anyone left who needs to be educated? Zorn…
From USAT: … CDC has not responded to USA TODAY’s requests, under the Freedom of Information Act, filed in June 2012, for records involving lab safety and security incidents at the lab complex. The latest set of “restricted” inspector general audits covered six federal entities conducting research on potential bioterror germs. Additional audits looked at…
One third of the Italian supply of swine flu vaccine (8 million doses) will be distributed mid November to mid-December. The other two thirds will be distributed after January 31, 2010. Italy is taking a Christmas vaccine break. They don’t feel the need to get everyone vaccinated by Halloween or Thanksgiving, thank goodness. How civilized….
Thanks to a reader for putting this article into a comment. It gives us a taste of how big the movement to censor medical professionals really is. Hundreds of doctors and nurses are being investigated in Michigan alone. Many states (and their medical boards) got their marching orders to create new crimes, and so, apparently…

Noah Schactman has an extremely detailed, useful piece on the anthrax mailings in Wired. Noah did his homework. The 72 comments are also interesting. UPDATE: Podcast with Noah here. Extracts of the magazine story follow: In February 2003, anthrax became part of the rationale for invading Iraq. Colin Powell went to the United Nations Security…

I’ve been thinking about how the FBI should have approached the case.
It’s pretty simple: look for spores. The perp unavoidably left a trail of spores: a ton of spores where the anthrax was made (and/or where the envelopes were filled), likely spores in the perp’s car, etc. We know that the letters were leaking spores like crazy, despite being sealed with tape.
There are a limited number of likely places where the anthrax could have been made, a limited number of people who could have done it. The FBI could have checked every likely place (including USAMRIID of course) and every likely person’s car for spores and cracked the case within a matter of days.
As they say in the comic books, “that would have been too easy”.
The only thing the FBI still has right now is that Bruce Ivins was in mental health treatment and the public’s ignorance about that.
Bruce Ivins showed good insight into his situation and did exactly what you’re supposed to do when you realize that your thinking is off. He sought treatment and he reached out to friends.
He’s not the type of person that was so unaware of his challenges that he could just act out all over other people. The FBI can’t have it both ways, although they do try.
FBI had, then tossed anthrax type used in attacks
