How Drug Company Money Is Undermining Science / Sci Am
This has been a big week for long articles about the role (read: SCANDAL) of money in the so-called science of medicine. Scientific American has a very worthwhile article with a focus on drugs for osteoporosis. I covered this subject once before. Charles Seife, the author, is an academic who worked very hard to piece…
Newest Emergent BioSolutions excuse on its Covid vaccine delay
This article does not make sense to me, but I am reproducing tonight’s NYT story below. If the quality control issues are still being sorted out, then the “conflation” of two vaccine ingredients is not the whole story of the plant’s problems. FDA knew there were problems a month ago, when it withheld the EUA…
Governor de Santis says that if people are forced by their employer to be vaccinated, and then become ill, the employer will be liable for damages!!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQgzcHQc0F0 I think the Governor has voiced an idea that will destroy the mandates. And he is calling back the legislature to act on the issue. While the PREP ACT provides a huge liability shield for everyone involved with vaccinations of EUA products, the EUA requires that people be informed about what is known about…
News: Analysis of the Spores, and Congressional Investigations
Itching to grapple with the scientific analysis employed by the FBI? Martin Enserink and Yudhijit Bhattacharjee of Science have done the best reporting yet on the kinds of microbial forensic evidence we are likely to see. Meanwhile, Carrie Johnson reports on House and Senate Judiciary Committee oversight panels, which have proposed September hearings to investigate…
The Avuncular Dr. Fauci, Fluent yet Facile. Is he also a Fraud?
It is all too easy to find mistakes, misstatements and omissions made by public health officials around the Coronavirus pandemic. Consider the fluent but facile Dr. Fauci. Have you ever heard him say that the institute he directs has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on coronavirus research? Has he tried to help Americans understand any…

Meryl, do you have any sense of what the percentage is (% visits for ILI) that the health departments declare is flu season? Some of us are tired of the charade of wearing masks at work.
The links in the sidebar don't work (e.g. to your paper on anthrax in Zimbabwe)
According to CDC's FluView, the %ili last week was under 3%–and flu was only widespread in NJ, VT and NV.
But according to state epidemiologist opinions (characterized by the final graphic on the page) the flu remained widespread almost everywhere last week.
Another way of looking at the mask issue is in reference to a recent flu vaccine efficacy estimate of 46%.
If 54% of HCWs who were vaccinated are not protected, why aren't vaccinated HCWs wearing masks too?
But of course there are no studies showing the masks prevent nosocomial spread. They are simply a punitive measure to enforce vaccinations of uncertain benefit and risk.
I will try and replace the broken link this weekend. The Zimbabwe paper should be accessible. Sorry.
