GPs must return flu vaccine over narcolepsy fears/ Independent
In early January, Ireland’s Health Service Executive advised doctors to use the Pandemrix (GSK) brand of swine flu vaccine only in the event they ran out of seasonal flu vaccine. This is the brand linked to narcolepsy cases. Apparently that warning was not sufficient. On April 3 Ireland’s Health Service informed doctors that they would…

CHD published my video podcast with Bobby Kennedy last week. It’s excellent.
When I do an interview I never have any sense of how it went. I am so focused on trying to get the right words out that I don’t even remember what I talked about when I am done. But I just listened to this and I think I did a good job explaining both…
H1N1 vaccines with novel adjuvants being developed for potential mass use
The US government has contracted with at least 5 pharmaceutical manufacturers to develop and produce H1N1 vaccines, using a variety of platforms and manufacturing methods. This is an excellent approach, since at this point no one knows which will succeed and how long it will take to obtain desired quantities of vaccine. A novel feature…

Meryl, do you have any sense of what the percentage is (% visits for ILI) that the health departments declare is flu season? Some of us are tired of the charade of wearing masks at work.
The links in the sidebar don't work (e.g. to your paper on anthrax in Zimbabwe)
According to CDC's FluView, the %ili last week was under 3%–and flu was only widespread in NJ, VT and NV.
But according to state epidemiologist opinions (characterized by the final graphic on the page) the flu remained widespread almost everywhere last week.
Another way of looking at the mask issue is in reference to a recent flu vaccine efficacy estimate of 46%.
If 54% of HCWs who were vaccinated are not protected, why aren't vaccinated HCWs wearing masks too?
But of course there are no studies showing the masks prevent nosocomial spread. They are simply a punitive measure to enforce vaccinations of uncertain benefit and risk.
I will try and replace the broken link this weekend. The Zimbabwe paper should be accessible. Sorry.
